What is MOSAIC Mentoring?

How much does it cost to join MOSAIC?
MOSAIC is a not-for-profit organisation. To cover the program costs such as the software and our operating costs like this website, we charge a small annual fee to be a member of MOSAIC. Fees in the UK are inclusive of VAT.
- If you are joining as a mentor there is no cost as you are giving your time to a mentee through the program
- If you are joining as a mentee, the cost is £89 (for UK) and $99 (for USA) per annum
- If you are joining as a mentor AND a mentee, the cost is £49 (for UK) and $59 (for USA) on the basis that you are also giving your time to a mentee through the program
If you are not based in the UK or USA, you can still apply for membership. Please select the USA and pay in $.
By applying for membership of MOSAIC you will agree to comply with our Code of Ethics and Terms & Conditions of Membership. These can be found here.
Do you pay expenses for meetings?
MOSAIC is a not-for-profit organisation. We do not reimburse any expenses relating to mentor/mentee meetings.
Why is MOSAIC for in-house legal professionals only?
MOSAIC stands for Mentoring Opportunites Shared Amongst In-House Counsel. This explains the origin of the program.
To join MOSAIC mentoring, all we ask is that you work in-house and not in a law firm. For us, in-house means the legal departments of private and publicly held companies as well as government and regulatory agencies. You can be a qualified solicitor, barrister or attorney, a patent or trade mark attorney, work in legal operations, compliance, the company secretariat or be a former lawyer who now runs your own business. Trainees or apprentices doing their training contracts in-house are also eligible to join.
Can I be a mentor and a mentee?
Yes, you can. It is easy to register as both and you will also get a discounted rate by registering to be both.
How do I use the software? I am having technical difficulties, can you help?
The technology platform is pretty intuitive and easy to use which is why we selected Chronus as our technology partner. Once you have joined MOSAIC and paid your annual membership fee, you will be directed to the MOSAIC mentoring platform. There you can login using your Google account if you have one or your LinkedIn details. This means that you don't have to set up a new password but can use your pre-existing Google or LinkedIn details. If you don't then you can set up an account using any email address and get a password to login and set up your profile. You can find a helpful infographic in our resources section here.
If you are having difficulties, please take a screenshot where possible and contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org with a description of your technical issue.
How does the matching work?
The amazingly clever technology behind MOSAIC does this for us. We have worked very closely with our technology partner, Chronus, to design an algorithm that will suggest mentor matches to mentees.
How long this takes, depends on the specifications you have selected for the mentor you are looking for. The website algorithm will search the database for a match according to those specifications and give you a % match. As a mentee, you then make a mentoring request to one of the suggested mentors (and only one at a time as a matter of professional courtesy) and if the mentor accepts, you take it from there. The system allows you to schedule appointments, set goals, receive email reminders and push notifications. There is also an app version of the MOSAIC system which you can download once you have registered.
What do I do if my mentoring relationship is not working?
Sometimes, for whatever reason, personalities, timing or life, a match is not meant to be or made to last. This is ok. You have the option to end the mentoring relationship anytime and rematch. We ask as a courtesy that you let your mentee/mentor know that you will be ending the mentoring relationship. You can send a communication within the system to do this.
What's the difference between mentoring and coaching?
Coaching and mentoring use similar skills and approach but coaching is often a short-term task-based approach focused on a specific development area or issue. Mentoring is usually a longer-term relationship (over 12 months) which can take place as and when the mentee needs advice, guidance or support on career and professional development. Mentoring can also be project-based, short-term or peer-to-peer; it is entirely dependant on your needs as a mentee and in finding the right mentor to meet those needs.
We offer separate (paid-for) coaching services for individuals and teams. If you are interested, you can find out more here. [This will redirect to you to a separate website]
Do I need training to become a mentor?
The short answer is no. Not everyone is looking for the same help or guidance. Not everyone wants to be the next General Counsel. Each of us brings something different and something unique in terms of our experience and our approach. This is what makes MOSAIC work.
However, we recognise that guidance is helpful and are working on bringing you more resources to support you through your mentoring journey. Check our resources section for further information.
Where is MOSAIC available?
Anywhere in the world. Most of our members are currently based in the UK and USA. We are continuing to expand. As MOSAIC Mentoring operates on a technology platform with no boundaries, you can join from outside those areas but your mentoring will be entirely virtual.

Do you run events or training?
This depends on where you are in the world. One of the primary drivers of creating MOSAIC Mentoring was to bring the in-house legal community together. We design and deliver training specially curated for legal through MOSAIC Campus, one of the three divisions of The MOSAIC Collective.
